Letter To/From The Editor

A sweet old photo from the Tunnel Brunch that I took. Some scenarios: Somi and I spent a lot of time together in my room one night in mid-May planning the Textile event. We had been really excited about this “soundtrack” idea that included a mixture of songs and dictating poems or stories out loud. She picked a short story about teeth. It was a perfect choice—the balance between guttural and gorgeous that is Tunnel. Dentaphilia turned out to be 20 minutes long when read out loud; Somi sat beside me while I read and read until I was talking in the gummy way that happens when you run out of saliva. The day of the event we decided that listening to a soundtrack of our own voices is really uncomfortable and ended up not using any of the recordings. The first time I met Somi, as in recognized her from Facebook and introduced myself, she was wearing wide-leg overalls! Olivia Nouriani was wearing the pair of pineapple pants two days ago and four different people, in …

MOLT open mic

Tunnel hosted its second open mic event at SPACE Art Center, to hold space for one another’s experiences and explore the “molting” nature of transitions. Somi Speaks: This is the third and most likely the last open mic event I’ve helped organize for high school students. Thank you forever to SPACE for hosting the open mic, providing an outlet for young voices, soliciting free pizza for the event (!!!), funding the printing of the zine, and everything else that you do for the arts community. Thank you forever to every person who stood up and shared their work and let us take a peek into your personal space. It was such a special night for me and I always feel so privileged to bear secondhand witness to your experiences and words. Also, a brief apology for my nervous energy leading up to the event: I’m working on being a more relaxed host. The Zine The Crowd

L’Amour Fou

Recommendation list by Joey Shapiro A French phrase that translates literally as “crazy love,” l’amour fou is also an apt descriptor of these five eccentric films of romance, passion, and obsession. Punch-Drunk Love (2002, Paul Thomas Anderson) A film in which the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts, Punch-Drunk Love is a revitalizing jolt to the heart of the traditional romantic comedy. The most immediately striking aspect of the film is that it stars Adam Sandler, of all actors, in what is easily the most mature and complex role of his career. Sandler plays Barry Egan, a novelty item salesman plagued by anger issues and a multitude of emotionally abusive sisters, who falls unexpectedly in love with one of his sisters’ co-workers, Lena (Emily Watson). Punctuated by ethereal visual interludes by video artist Jeremy Blake  and featuring such unforgettable pillow-talk as “I want to chew your face, and I want to scoop out your eyes,” the film stands far apart from the prior works of both Sandler and director Paul Thomas …

Pilot Episode: My So-Called Life

Words and photos by Somi Jun. ARE YOU FASTING TODAY? follow the bell curve of the stomach, the parched strokes at the base of the esophagus. trace up the jawline, loop around the ear, pull thumb over a gummy train of facial hair. i feel i have been fasting for you, sunrise to sundown, and finally, the line has broken. Part 1: PILOT EPISODE, MSCL Flaccid smoke, erect. Joker gloss melts off sweaty reject’s face as feet stay feet away from his deadass beat. Beat. 106 degrees echo off the 8 o’clock concrete, corpse waves from the afternoon, my stomach and veins scooped hollow, pulse throbs mellow to the Beat, No point to this deadass heat. Be glad for the French Braided coronation around cud-chewing lips, because Burger King does serve vegetarian fare, 3.49 and charged to Straight Outta Compton. Heat full of shoes and strangers inside the house. Robert DeNiro is the only purity in all this Drivel and mellow yellow youth, my flaccid night. The theme song of my so-called life. Part 2: STANDING ON MY OWN TWO FEET my …

Happy Birthday, Tunnel!

Pictured above: Little Baby Tunnel –> Big Baby Tunnel. Babies courtesy of Daniela Nicholson. Dear Tunnel People (moles?), It makes me so happy when people approach me with positive feedback about Tunnel, when they say that it’s grown so much and that it’s run so well. It always catches me off guard, because Tunnel is my baby and its beginnings were so humble: just one student, behind a laptop, struggling with the Gaussian blur level of Tunnel’s logo. At first, I was always pleading for artwork and support, because I felt I had to be able to offer something quantifiable in return for your contributions. But what I’ve learned, more than anything else, is how generous young artists are. I and the Tunnel staff have been so blessed by young people, who send in inquiries from across the country / world, who send version after version of the same image because we need higher resolution, who readily volunteer their time to contribute more to Tunnel and share Tunnel with their loved ones. This goes for …

the STAFF hive #2: “fast write with many grammatical errors”

Welcome to the second edition of the STAFF hive, where Tunnel STAFF members share their ideas/weeks/vibes/earworms/thoughts/images with you, so we can all get to know each other a little better. We hope you enjoy. Think of it as our long-distance love letter to you. Minu Jun: A fast write with many grammatical errors The Italians know how to do cinema, so do the French but I don’t know sometimes I feel the French speak too much. I love Cleo, Cache, and Vivre Sa Vie but something about them, except Cleo, leave me a little cold. They’re too Proust for my Patterson. Especially Godard. I should watch more of his works but out of the three I have seen: Masculin Feminin, Vivre Sa Vie, and A Woman is a Woman, I just couldn’t help thinking “Now let’s see you walk the walk.” I always feel emotionally a little unsatisfied. Even their more trashier offerings like Rollin are never as much fun as Bava or Argento. Although I loved Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Demy isn’t trashy, I haven’t …

the STAFF hive: it’s Wednesday.

Welcome to the first edition of the STAFF hive, where Tunnel STAFF members share their ideas/weeks/vibes/earworms/thoughts/images with you. This is what we have to say: it’s Wednesday. And we hope you enjoy. Think of it as our long-distance love letter to you. Somi i daydream sometimes about getting a really good back massage, though asofnow i don’t have the time or $$ to go to a spa. or a masseuse? i twist my shoulders around and knead those muscles myself (which is true independence). i went to the hello kitty exhibit on saturday, and it just made me so happy to think that so many people came together to create this shrine to an animated non-cat girl named hello kitty, and so many people went to so many lengths to come and pay homage to her. the show runs until april, and it’s $10, and you get a free hello kitty headband. everyone walks around in their hello kitty headbands, and takes pictures in front of the hello kitty inspired artwork, and it’s just really nice, and …
